Naples Charter Area

This charter area is centred on the Gulf of Naples in the Tyrrhenian Sea, part of the Mediterranean. The large bay is dominated by the Mount Vesuvius, a dormant volcano famous for the eruption of 79 AD that buried the Roman town of Pompeii

The islands of Ischia and Procida [the Phlegraeans] lie to the W of the Gulf of Naples together with the Pontine archipelago which is made up of the islands of Gavi, Palmarola, Ponza, Santo Stefano, Ventotene and Zannone

Famous the world over, the stunning Amalfi Coast and the Isle of Capri are situated at the southern end of the bay. Continue further south and you will find yourself on the unspoilt Cilento coast with its numerous, charming fishing villages

If you are planning a two week charter you might sail north and spend a day or two in Rome. Or venture south and explore the Aeolian islands off the north coast of Sicily

• Season •

The season runs from mid-April through to the end of October. The first three weeks of August can be considered peak season. There's a lot to be said for considering the "shoulder" season from mid-May to mid-June, and September through to mid-October. Why? It's very much cheaper. You will avoid the crush of high/peak season. The weather is still very pleasant and there is a better chance of wind and some great sailing

• Weather • Climate • Wind •

Average summer temperatures in the Gulf of Naples range from 21C in May and October rising to 28C in July and August. The gulf sees 8+ hours of sunshine per day throughout the season. Generally rainfall is light, June and July are the driest months. The wind blows predominantly from SW - NW. There is the occasional possibility of a NE. Onshore breezes can be expected close to the coast

• Onshore Don't Miss •

Naples, the largest city in southern Italy, has one of the world’s largest historic centres and is famous for its UNESCO World Heritage status

Pompeii and Ercolano are both Roman cities buried when Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. Now fully excavated they are remarkably well preserved. The sites are managed by the same company and it is easy to visit both in one day using a combined ticket and the local train which connects both

Pizza Margherita and Limoncello. Probably not my favourite combination I'll admit

According to popular tradition, in 1889, during a visit to Naples by Queen Margherita of Savoy, wife of King Umberto I, chef Raffaele Esposito and his wife created a pizza resembling the colours of the Italian flag, red (tomato), white (mozzarella) and green (basil) and named it after the queen

Limoncello is an intensely lemon-flavored liqueur most famously associated with and produced in Sorrento, the Amalfi coast and the island of Capri. It is made from lemon zest, water, alcohol, and sugar

• Marine Wildlife •

You can expect to see dolphins. Whenever I sail in the Med I'm always bumping into them! Well not literally of course but the boat is often surrounded by a pod jumping alongside and diving under the bow

Other species that can be found in the Mediterranean Sea include; fin whales, sperm whales, grey sperm whales, pilot whales, Cuvier’s beaked whales, bottlenose dolphins, striped dolphins, common dolphins and loggerhead turtles
